Ireland at $512 billion is the 5th-largest investor in US: it's a fiction

The $512 billion and €38.96 billion figures are both correct, but they measure two completely different economic metrics.
The confusion comes from comparing cumulative national Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to the annual exports of a specific agency's client companies.
The Difference Between the Two Figures
MetricAmountScopeWhat it Measures
Total Cumulative FDI$512 BillionAll Irish entities in the USThe total historical value of investments, acquisitions, and operations built up over decades by all Irish companies (like CRH, Kerry Group, and Smurfit WestRock) in the US market.
Enterprise Ireland Exports~€38.9 BillionEnterprise Ireland clients globallyThe value of goods and services sold internationally in a single year only by companies supported by the government agency Enterprise Ireland.

CRH plc was formed on October 20, 1970, through the merger of two prominent Irish building materials companies: Cement Limited (established in 1936) and Roadstone Limited (established in 1949).
Smurfit was founded in 1934 as a small box-making business in Rathmines, Dublin, Ireland..
Acquired by Jefferson Smurfit in 1938, it quickly grew into a dynamic and forward-looking business, becoming one of Ireland’s leading manufacturers and listed on the Irish Stock Exchange in 1964.
The company started operations in Dublin, producing cardboard boxes and packaging for the local Irish market.
In 2001, Chairman and CEO Michael Smurfit resisted shareholder pressure to resign or diversify the heavily family-led board during the share price slump.
Smurfit Kappa was formed through the 2005 merger of Ireland's Jefferson Smurfit Group and Netherlands-based Kappa Packaging.
In 2024, WestRock acquired Smurfit Kappa to be the second-leading global paper and packaging company in the U.S.

America's 250th Anniversary: The Good and the Bad

Columbus’s expeditions opened a long-lasting Atlantic world that linked Europe, Africa, and the Americas. They spurred plantation slavery, transferred crops like maize, potatoes, and cacao to Europe, and introduced horses, cattle, and disease to the Western Hemisphere. Culturally and politically, his memory animates histories, maps, monuments, and disputes. Some observers credit him with initiating modern globalisation; others view his career as a catastrophe for Indigenous peoples. Debates over Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day show how his name anchors conversations about colonial expansion, memory

Norse Vikings, led by Leif Erikson, landed in Newfoundland (in modern-day Canada) around 1000 CE (Common Era).

A study published in the journal Nature provided precise scientific proof that Vikings were active in North America in the year 1021 AD—exactly 471 years before Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492.
The Site: The evidence comes from L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada. Discovered in 1960, this is the only confirmed Norse settlement site in North America.

Christopher Columbus (1492) [1451-1506]
  • Who: Italian explorer Cristoforo Colombo, sailing for Spain.
  • Where: He landed on an island in the Bahamas (and later Cuba and Hispaniola). He met the local Guanahani native inhabitants. He wanted to find a direct western sea route to India, China (Cathay), and the broader East Indies to bypass Ottoman-controlled land routes and trade directly for valuable spices, gold, and silk.
  • He believed he had reached the "Indies" (the regions of South and East Asia, including India and China), and he called the natives Indinians. Until the 196Os Native Americans were called Indians.
  • Outcome: This voyage marked the start of permanent European contact, exploration, and colonisation across the Americas.
  • 16th Century (c. 1550–1580s): Navigators began mounting compass bowls on gimbals (free-swinging hinged rings). This kept the compass level despite the rolling motion of a ship.
